YMCA

refurbishment of 11,000sqm of space across 3 levels of basement, including gym & pool facilities, wellness space, meeting and hospitality spaces

YMCA Central was founded in 1848 as the first YMCA in the world, and in 1970´s relocated into a bespokely-built brutalist development off Tottenham Court Road, in Zone 1 London. Architecture00 master-planned and oversaw the 4-phased remodelling of the 11,000sqm of space across 3 levels of basement, including gym & pool facilities, wellness space, meeting and hospitality spaces. The total project had a construction cost of circa £6 million, spread over 4 years. Phase 01 itself contained a number of sub-phases since the club, with circa 5000 members, remained open throughout the entire period construction. Given the club is subterranean with only one public entrance, the phasing, construction management plan, and fire strategy for the construction period had to be developed to permit the contractor’s use of emergency stairs and just in time deliveries.
