Architecture 00 has partnered with curator Beatrice Galilee to imagine an open café with an annual programme of art commissions, events and installations.
They propose the café should play a role similar to that of Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth or the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall — less a building, and more a stage, conceived very literally as an “inverted flytower” beneath the surface of the square.
Technologies developed for the stage are used to create a responsive platform. This allows for various arrangements, from a flat platform with public furniture and a café kiosk, to a sunken auditorium and sheltered underground space for performances.
